This poem was written while my daughter Andrea Gent was in critical condition after a tragic automobile accident. Her family and friends were praying for her recovery. It was written from Andrea's point of view. She comes from a long line of Texas Aggies, and was a pre-Law student at Texas A&M.  [ David W. Gent ]

Two Aggie Rings

I have two Aggie Rings
On my tiny left hand
One from my Paw Paw
And one from my Dad

Rings just made of metal
Poured in a mold
But they have a meaning
More precious than gold

These Rings have been carried
With honor and pride
They represent feelings
Held deeply inside

They have powerful symbols
On loops of pure gold
Of traditional values
Centuries old

My Daddy and Paw Paw
Have worn them for years
These Rings have been present
Through triumphs and tears

These Rings have seen war
And sorrow, and pain
They've been 'round the world
And come home again

They've been in attendance
At marriage and birth
And some of the happiest
Times on this Earth

They've felt the warm handshake
Of wonderful friends
And the caresses of love
On which life depends

My uncles and aunts
And great uncles, too,
Have worn Aggie Rings
All their lives through

I was not always certain
What all of this means
But my family flows
Through these two Aggie Rings

A family that loves me
And loves the Lord, too
They stand close behind me
In all that I do

When it came time for college
I could have done many things
But I wanted my family
To have three Aggie Rings

I was working so hard
On a Ring of my own
Why, just last semester
I pulled 4.0

I'm not yet a Senior
But my Daddy was near
To give me his Ring
A little early this year

My Paw Paw who loves me
Was further away
But he sent his Ring
To be with me today

So whatever my Lord
And the future may bring
Remember the day
I wore two Aggie Rings
